    Course: Technical English and Terminology

    Evaluation methodology: Your assessment will be based on a set of standards that includes: Tutorial tests in the University platform (I mean here while learning), assignments, and eventually (if possible) a written exam. 


    Learning Methodology: Read the courses carefully for several times, and translate any suspected understanding. Translate to all languages that you understand. Translate both words and phrases and see the difference. Use Cambridge dictionary (or Oxford dictionary or any other reliable dictionary) to understand the meaning of words, and also you can hear the pronunciation of words by clicking on the sound icon. Use the Chat rooms and Forums to interact with your colleagues, I will be there if necessary. Think in English for 15 minutes a day, and keep it going. Do the tests and see the feedback if available. Fortunately for everyone, most of word processing environments are equipped with spelling checkers. However, it is worth stating that I am using British English either for spelling or speaking, so do not consider the difference as typos. 

    NB: Depending on how you perform and how fast you learn, oral sessions will be considered.

      To describe an activity that happens at a non-specific time in the past

      Present perfect continuous

      To describe an activity started in the past and still happening at the time of speaking, or to describe a temporary situations or habits

      To describe an action in the future which finishes before a certain time, but we don’t know exactly when

      will + subject + have + past participle

      Exp: Will I have finished the course?

      Future‎ perfect continuous

      Similarly with present/past perfect continuous, but in future

      will + have + been + verb + ing

      Exp: We will have been working on it for ten moths next week

      will + not + have + been + verb + ing

      Exp: They will not have been preparing for the exam

      will + subject + have + been + verb + ing

      Exp: Will they have been reading?

      NB: in spoken English and non-academic writing you can use the short form: will = ’ll, will not = won’t. ‎

    • Write a big abstract of the thesis of your previous degree. 

      The abstract must have a number of words ranging between 100 and 150 words. 

      In scientific and academic writing, only present simple, present perfect and past simple are used. Very rarely are used the past perfect (for instance when we talk about something that was true in the past but is no longer true) and the future tense (for instance when we talk about future works).

      You may start by introducing the subject highlighting its importance. Then turn to the problematic describing it clearly. Then you can talk about what you did, and what you found, and how the results were. Then you can provide some future works that you suggest for future generations. 

      NB: For those who were together in their dissertations. You can submit just one copy indicating all contributors.

    • Conditionals are used to describe the outcome of (i) something that can happen in the present or future, or (ii) something that might have happened in the past but did not.

      There are four types of conditionals:

    • You have to carry out research on a topic, then write a report on it. 

      Divide yourselves into groups of 4 to 5.
      When agreeing on a team, one of the team members will send me a message containing the names of the team. The message must be sent here on the platform or through the email above. Then I will send you a list of suggested topics and you will choose one of them. The priority in choosing topics is for the team that texts me first.

      There are 23 topics, and they cannot be repeated, that is to say, each team will work on a different topic from the other teams' topics.

      The report size must be within 400-500 words.

    • One way to classify nouns is whether they are countable or uncountable.

      Countable nouns are used for things that can be counted using numbers, and, therefore, have both singular and plural forms. For example: pen, pens, book, books, ... etc.

      Uncountable nouns, are used for things that cannot be counted using numbers, and they only can have singular form (usually they do not have a plural form). For example: Time, we cannot say times, weather, we cannot say weathers, water, we cannot say waters, ... etc. 

      If someone wanted to ask about the quantity of a countable noun, he would say "how many?", but, if he wanted to ask about the quantity of an uncountable noun, he would say "how much?". For example: How many tables do we need? How much milk is there? 

      Countable nouns can use "a" or "an" for singular or "some" for plural. For example: There is a book on the shelf, I have some friends in Turkey. 

      A quantity of an uncountable noun can be expressed using a word or expression like: some, much, a bit of, a pair of, a lot of, a cup of, one kilogram of, one litre of, ... etc. For example: Give me some bread and a cup of milk, a lot of research has been done on the subject, I wear a pair of gloves in cold weather. 

      Depending on the situation or context, some uncountable nouns can be used as countable nouns. For example: (countable) We will have three coffees, (uncountable) I do not like coffee, (countable) his grandfather got few grey hairs, (uncountable) she has long brown hair. 

      A way to know uncountable nouns is that they do not take "a" or "an" (the indefinite articles), and they cannot be pluralized.
