What is Reported Speech?
Reported Speech is when you tell somebody else what you or a person said before.
Distinction must be made between direct speech and Reported speech.
Example:
Direct speech                                                     Reported speech
She said: " I like tuna fish. "                                 She said that She liked tuna fish.
Different types of saentences.
When you use reported speech , you either report: " statements ; questions; commands  or requests.
1) Reporting statements/ When transforming statements, chech whether tou have to change:
_ Pronouns
_ Tenses
_ Place and time expression.
Pronouns: In reported speech , you have to change the pronouns depending on who says what.
Example:  She says , " My dad likes roast chicken. "
She says that  her dad likes roast chicken.
Not : if the introductory verb is in the present tense ( e.g. he says ) there is no backshift , do not change the tense of the verb.
Example: She says, " I don't like tuna fish."
She says that  she doesn't like tuna fish.
But if the introductory verb is in the past , you must change the tense.
Example: He said  " I am happy ."
He said that he was happy.
The modal verbs :could , should , must ,aught to, used to ,... do not normally change.
Example:   She said , "He might be right."
She said that he might be right.
